Ivanhoe traveled to Parkdale for their earliest fixture of the year thus far – 9.20am Away. A very supportive committee provided a bus from Chelsworth Park, so the team could tackle the crucial game as one unit. This was a success.
From the time Old Ivanhoe rolled into Parkdale, there was a sense of purpose and hunger that the coaching staff had been seeking all year. Heading into the game OIGFC were 4 points off 4th position on the ladder and opportunity to play finals, so in the context of the season – taking on the top of the ladder Parkdale away was a big task, and an even bigger opportunity.
Old Ivanhoe jumped the relaxed Parkdale outfit, coming out with 4 goals to their zero. However, this was quickly pegged back in the 2nd quarter with 5 goals to the Vultures, Old Ivanhoe just adding the single goal in the 2nd quarter which saw the teams head into the sheds almost level at the major break. The resilence within the OIGFC camp was apparent, where earlier in the season, the large 2nd quarter of Parkdale would have shook the U19s, now it gave them steely resolve.
The second half was tightly fought with OIGFC opening a 2 goal difference at the 3 quarter time break. This advantage was reeled into a single goal with approx. 10 mins to go….. it was at this point that Ivanhoe played to their strengths – executing a high pressure, stoppage to stoppage brand of footy that was able to control the pace of the game, and see the final siren with the 1 goal advantage still intact.
Now just 2 points off the fourth ladder position and finals footy, Old Ivanhoe U19s will be looking to grow the pressure game they are starting to gain consistency with, and tackle Collegians at home this week, in an attempt to jump them on the ladder.
