After last week’s tight loss to ladder leaders Williamstown, hopes were high for a turnaround against Old Camberwell who had been torn apart by Williamstown in Round 1 by in excess of 100 points. We had also comfortably accounted for Old Camberwell in an early practice game and therefore entered the game with confidence despite the forced losses of captain Mal Mitris, full forward Brandon Lee (both through injury) and Trent Crouch (unavailable due to work commitments). Inclusions for this important game were Rob Glavas up forward, leader Carl Groth and Max Jones for his 1st senior game; congratulations to Max.
Unfortunately, the performance of the side was very lack lustre. Again, pressure was in short supply, with the ball continually rebounding from our forward line, allowing Camberwell to constantly set up attacking opportunities. The much larger Camberwell follower division also provided their onballers with the lion’s share of stoppage and clearance possessions. Despite the early malaise that afflicted the team, at ½ time we were still very much in the game trailing by only 16 points with Old Camberwell leading 6.7.43 to an inaccurate 3.9.27.
The 3rd quarter however, proved to be a disaster with Old Camberwell adding a further 7 goals to our solitary major to end the quarter with a match winning lead of 53 points (13.10.88 to 4.11.35). With the result a foregone conclusion at ¾ time, the final quarter saw a relatively even contest with each side adding 3 goals. The final scores were Old Camberwell 16.11.107 to OIGFC 7.14.56.
Recruit Justin Powick was best in the mid-field, with backline trio Jake Erman, Tom Kellock and Sam Keogh continuing their good form and again featuring amongst the votes. Nick Reeves-Smyth and Daniel Cookson also never stopped trying. Adrian Del Monte managed 3 majors and Nick Reeves-Smyth 2.
The three “outs” from the previous week undoubtedly had an impact, in particular, the height of Mal Mitris down back and “General” Lee, the main forward target. Trent Crouch’s ability at ground level was also missed. We look forward to the return of these three key players.
