Old Ivanhoe vs Old Trinity (U19s)
Great to start the season with a win after a Bye round 1 for OIGFC U19.
Versing Old Trinity on the small Chelsworth No 2 Oval, our game was built around pressure upon the opposition, forcing stoppages and not allowing fastball movement and subsequent quick scoring. The team absolutely adhered to this objective, collectively achieving 62 tackles for the game (Q1-17, Q2-18, Q3-15, Q4 – 12).
While we had numerous forward entries early in the first Quater, these went to behinds. Old Trinity punished our missed shots with 2 early goals, immediately challenging the resolve of the 2019 playing group. It was encouraging to see a resilence in the group, and an increase in pressure on Old Trinity. This high work rate turned the game for us and resulted in scoring opportunities for 8 goal kickers for us, promising for a season with various avenues to goal.
Rather than give kudos to individuals, I’d prefer to focus on the collective pressure and team-first ball use which got us the result. In this game, we welcomed 13 first game players to OIGFC, 3 of this currently attending IGS year 12 all who performed well, a great sign for future years with more debutants to come in further rounds.
A solid start, and a blueprint made for our season, a focused playing group that is hungry for each 4 points and loves high pressure stoppage to stoppage footy. Like the captain of the reserves Anthony Stenta says, the only thing more important than pressure is pressure.
