Therry Penola v Old Ivanhoe (Women)
The first round of Old Ivanhoe’s season saw them head to Therry Penola in an anticipated clash against a strong second year team to get the season underway. The game got underway with a flurry of possession to both sides, Therry ultimately breaking through for the first goal of the day. A tough remainder of the quarter saw Old Ivanhoe struggle to capitalise from their chances and Therry utilise their ability to run through the middle of the ground to pile on three first quarter goals. The two biggest highlights for Old Ivanhoe were a magnificent forward line mark to Grace Rattray-Wood and a streaming run down the wing from Sarah Foley, taking two bounces in the process.
The second quarter saw Therry kick another goal and Old Ivanhoe only manage a point. Towards the end of the quarter Old Ivanhoe began to shake off what had seemed to be some early game jitters and began forcing the ball forward more consistently and for longer periods of time. The tackling pressure rose from both sides and the contest certainly stepped up a gear leading into half time.
Exiting half time, it appeared that Old Ivanhoe had regained some of the composure that would be required to take this game down to the wire. Sarah Foley broke through a pack to kick what would be Old Ivanhoe’s first official women’s goal, a goal that would lift the rest of the team into believing the comeback was on. The rest of the quarter would see Old Ivanhoe struggling to convert chances as they kicked four straight behinds after the sole goal. Therry piled on two late goals to push their lead to 28 points at the last break.
In the last quarter Old Ivanhoe dug deep to show guts and fought hard to lock the ball forward with Georgia Vlahos and Sophie Cuthbert both making blazing runs down the wing on several occasions but in the end Therry’s ability to rebound off half back proved to be the difference. Rachel Jowett stood tall as she found herself looking a natural in the ruck despite it being unfamiliar territory for her. Romy Costa reaped the rewards of a full day of hard work with a goal late in the piece to bring Old Ivanhoe closer but unfortunately it was not quite enough.
Overall Therry took the points 8.5.53 to Old Ivanhoe 2.8.20
Old Ivanhoe showed a lot of mental toughness to improve in every quarter and learned a lot of valuable lessons that will be put to task in round two.
