** Round 1 – Match Review
————————————————————

Old Ivanhoe’s seniors sent a statement to the VAFA’s Premier C men’s grade with a rousing 17-point win over Parkdale on Saturday.

The Hoes were made to earn it after coughing up 20-point lead and trailing at the final change but ran over the top of the Vultures with rain pouring down at Gerry Green Reserve, 9.11 (65) to 12.10 (82).

A strong wind heading almost directly into the teeth of goals at the southern end made the first quarter tough going for the visitors after co-captain Nick Reeves-Smyth lost the toss.

Parkdale hit the scoreboard first and looked as if they might hold the early ascendancy, but the Hoes dug their heels in and stopped the bleeding before it had a chance to start, taking a two-point quarter time lead against the wind.

Boom recruits Patrick Naish and Billy Murphy showed their class through the midfield and in the forward 50 to lead a dominant four goals to one second quarter and, if it weren’t for them, along with fellow superstar recruit Nick Riddle in the back half, a third quarter lapse in concentration would have been more costly.

The Hoes were held scoreless in the third and conceded 3.3 the other way, trailing by a single point at three quarter time, but were still warm favourites with the wind behind their backs heading into the last.

Rain fell consistently, but not heavily, during a tough and gritty second half, but it wasn’t enough to stop Old Ivanhoe from storming home to a perfect season-opening win away from home on the back of five goals to two in the last quarter.

Parkdale had no answers for Murphy, who was best afield with 25 disposals and four goals, while Naish (26 disposals), Riddle (22), Jacob Agrotis (25) and Jackson Powell (22) were also influential.

In just his second senior game for the club, 18-year-old big man Luke Watson, rucking against arguably the competition’s premier ruck, was also among the visitors’ best, as was Reeves-Smyth in his first game of competitive footy in almost a year, having battled a season-ending Achilles injury in 2022.

Old Ivanhoe host Old Camberwell in their first home game of the season next week.
